Car upkeep important as winter approaches

winter car problemsKeeping up with car maintenance, especially during winter, can help avoid an accident, which would drive up a consumer’s auto insurance rates.

Recently, AAA recommended consumers have their vehicles looked at by an auto repair shop. During the visit, drivers should make sure mechanics check out a car’s battery and recharging system, along with drive belts and engine hoses.

For more, the AAA provides car winter tips and maintenance advice.

Tires should also be an area of concern, especially if consumers live in certain parts of the country.

“In areas with heavy winter weather, changing to snow tires on all four wheels will provide the best winter traction,” says AAA. “All-season tires will work well in light to moderate snow conditions, providing they have adequate tread depth.”

Air and oil filters, along with wiper blades, should also be examined and replaced if needed. The amount of washer fluid is also something to be examined.

Other experts note that having a car emergency kit can be especially important during the winter, especially if a motorist gets stranded. It should include a shovel, snacks, blankets and a first-aid kit.
